Taz Arnold from Sa-Ra Creative Partners (producers of space funk jams for the likes of Talib Kwalei, Kanye and Jurassic 5) goes inside his vault of space jazz psychedelia for his new single. I don’t mean a figurative vault here. If this video is to be believed homeboy records and practices in a vault filled with Louis Vuitton accessories, drum machines, old Michael Jackson records and Avon Barkesdale (wtf?) tripping on acid. Sun-Ra would most definitely approve. I don’t know why but I’m digging this jam extra hard. Maybe because it sounds like something MF DOOM or Madlib might have cooked up 5 years ago when they were in their smooth jazz rap phase. In any event, the song is catchy in a weird way flipping the usual paradigm with the repetitive vocals playing backup to the dynamic beat.  I cant imagine that this song will be a summer jam for most people, but the chanting rapping over the grade “A” freakout jazz is the kinda thing that gets me really excited for the full length Hood Love. With Taz and Major‘s vocals playing over each other while that busy beat runs underneath, it feels like this song is almost a proto rap song. Kind of like some of those Gil Scott Herren recordings where he’s just doing spoken word poetry over a jazz beat, think The Revolution Will Not Be Televised era – not quite rap as we know it but close enough.  If the whole LP is like this I’m really excited to get this.
