Early last night Lil B aka “the based god” aka “the based princess” had his first performance in New York at Santos Party House and for the first time “the based princess” moniker felt completely appropriate. This show felt less like a concert in the definition that I’ve known them, and more like some kind of coming out party for a debutante. People were ecstatic to see the dude – I never experienced Beatlemania, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake or any other kind of swoon inducing pop star before but this looked very similar from where I stood. Except while all those other dudes commanded fans numbering in the millions (mostly women), who were eager to hear their songs of heartbreak and love, this dude has songs about how hoes are on his dick because he looks like John Stockton. That’s what made it so odd to see the reaction of the crowd. Not the fact that Lil B in person does not look like a retired white basketball player, but the fact that a dude who’s entire catalog has been built around idiosyncratic personal ticks garnered such rabid excitement from his fans. It was both profoundly exciting and encouraging to see that simply doing what you feel could get you a devoted following and at the same time puzzling as hell. Do all of these people really identify with songs like “I’m A Mechanic”, “Pro Based Demi God” or “Mist Is Green”? Or are they just here to scream along to “Violate That Bitch”? Either way it was an extremely positive experience to see so many people celebrate someone for their art.
