Y’all need to feel this joint right here. In your loins, in your heart and in your mind. This right here, is next level work. It’s the kind of grown folk business that get’s you astro traveling. Anyone who’se been to a black wedding between 93 and infinity has heard the unadulterated version of this joint dropped at the reception, and that’s beautiful. Black love and all. But, what’s weird about this track in the Chopped and Screwed iteration, is that while the music is heartfelt the lyrics betray an entirely different feeling. When you slow the song down and focus on the lyrics the song changes from a romantic ballad to a pragmatic plea of compromise.
Jagged Edge are basically saying “Hey, I’m lonely, your breast are sagging, I’m losing my hair… let’s stop fucking around and get this tax break.” That’s in the original version, but when you chop and screw it, it sounds as if dude is both sad and unsure — he’s stuttering. “…girl, girl… let’s let’s let’s get married…” There’s a shifty eyed quality and shrug implied by the chop and screw, theres defeat in this song now. In this incarnation “Let’s Get Married” changes from a celebration of matrimony to an indictment of the entire institution. O.G Ron C is taking you places most people are scared to go to until their marriage fails. They’re laying in bed next to each other, mad because they wasted 7 years of their life — they think back to that proposal and bitterly mutter “let’s get married, indeed”.
