Over a Party Supplies beat that flips the same sample as A Tribe Called Quest’s classic “Can I Kick It” Danny Brown unfolds a story of growing up as the kid your mom would never let you hang out with. Using little kids as stand ins for rappers isn’t a new idea (these Biggie and Kanye videos immediately come to mind), but there’s something about the sense memory built into that sample—who doesn’t have fond memories connected with ATCQ—and the energetic performance of the lil kid version of Danny Brown that combine to make this video wild nostalgic. Beyond that, the song is actually about being a kid which makes the whole experience more cohesive than the Ye and B.I.G videos. With the video centering around the mystery of how Danny Brown lost his two front teeth, it flips his most visually off putting characteristic into an “aww” inducing trip down memory lane. For those keeping track of such things at home, that’s a great way to self mythologize.

Now for Chief Keef to shoot a video like this, set in 2006.
