If you talk to cats that do a lot of yoga, they always talk about how the practice is life changing. They’ll tell you that it’s very calming, helps them to unite their minds and bodies, and deepens their understanding the world. Yet, for those of us that don’t do yoga, we’re left wondering “how’d you get all of that from stretching?” The Lil B songs contained in our second entry in the Faces of the Based God series are kind of similar. For heads that don’t “get” what the fuss is with #based music, it sounds like a bunch of incoherent, inconsequential rambling. But, to those who are into Lil B’s more existential works, these are the songs that show his more wizened and spiritual side. Based God Is Eternal could easily play during the cool down period of a very progressive yoga session. Everyone would sit legs crossed, relaxing and concentrating while Lil B would impart knowledge on how the world works and remind everyone to breathe deeply. Clams Casino and Keyboard Kid instrumentals play quietly in the background. Namaste. Swag.
While the first volume in this series—Based God the Star—was full of more catchy pop offerings, Based God Is Eternal finds Lil B on a spacier tip musically. Many of the beats here are exceptionally soothing and expansive, pulling from more recent traditional rap tracks back to his early days of rapping over near ambient soundscapes (and occasionally, actually rapping over ambient soundscapes). If there were to ever be a guide to understanding what #based is about philosophically these songs would come the closest to capturing the idea. Conceptually you get Lil B tackling a bunch of topics from self motivation “Motivation”, the benefits of traveling “Walk The World”, the importance of being an individual “Okay To Be Different Remix”, why drinking water is awesome spiritually and physically “The Water”, and how buying second hand clothes can be a political statement “Thrift Store”. Really all of these songs are a rallying cry for weirdoes and cats who feel slightly out of step with the values of society, assuming you can penetrate the very specific way Lil B rhymes. Also, for those that smoke a lot of weed and turn into couch philosophers, these are the songs you’ve been looking for to soundtrack your pontification sessions.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for part three of Faces of the Based God where we drop Based God Struggles, Based God Is Gorgeous and Based God Loves You to lead you through Lil B’s vast archives.
